Product Description:

As we noted in our earlier reviews of  Charbroil’s Table-Top Grill and 600-series Grill, Charbroil is one the largest and most well-known grill manufacturers in the US. They sell dozens of lines of grills, smokers, fryers, and grill accessories. But when the company started as a Columbus Iron Works in 1849 in Columbus, Georgia, they made heavy weapons (such as cannons), even supplying the Confederacy during the Civil War. After the war, they launched the world’s first commercial ice machines in 1872.

In 1925, budding cotton and textile conglomerate W.C. Bradley Co. purchased Columbus Iron Works and re-tasked their new subsidiary with making farm-implements, wood-burning heaters, and wood-burning stoves. In 1948, Columbus Iron Works sold its first cast iron charcoal barbecue grill and re-launched itself as Charbroil.

W.C. Bradley Co. is a family run business, now headed by its fourth-generation CEO.  In the past two decades, the company has been expanding through acquisitions.  They bought Thermos’s barbecue division in the late 90’s, and they own the Tiki brand of outdoor lighting.

American Alternative Review:

Charbroil has a 150-year long history in this country, with roots that go back to the Civil War.  Unfortunately, after over a century of US manufacturing, Charbroil moved all material sourcing and manufacturing to China in 2006. That includes every single part in their Classic Grills.  After the grills are assembled, they are shipped to Charbroil’s facility in Columbus, GA, where they are packaged and warehoused for distribution.

Charbroil’s design and engineering are still in Columbus, too.  The company works closely with retailers like Home Depot and Lowe’s to design new grills to meet consumers’ newest demands.

Because of this recent outsourcing, it’s hard to recommend any of their products when other alternatives are available that are more American-made.

1.5/5 stars

This Classic Grill is one of Amazon’s top-ten selling barbecues at time of posting.  With a sizable cooking area combined with a low price, it has decent reviews.  Other classic grills are also for sale on Amazon and rank very highly.  Note that most grills available on Amazon are a generation or two old, but are still serviced by Charbroil.
